Description:

Produced without makers marks, this rifle shows a number of features introduced for the Mauser rifle in 1892. These developments mark a critical developmental step from the 1880 and 1890 Mauser rifles towards the true magnum opus, the Model 98. The most critical introduced feature is the non-rotating long extractor, which would be a signature and oft-copied feature of the 98, providing more reliable feeding and extraction of cartridges than the previous rotating extractors. Next, the trigger guard and magazine were integrated into a single component, and the three-position safety was introduced. Other features of the 1892 would be a reinforcing rib added to the left bolt channel and a magazine floorplate designed to be detached using a cartridge rim as a tool. Some of these features would be abandoned (like the rib), and others would undergo further refinement (like the integrated magazine and trigger guard). Blade front and folding ladder rear sights, the latter graduated to "20", with no externally visible receiver markings and a straight-handled bolt numbered "852" on multiple components. Fitted with a smooth straight wrist stock, marked "A./149." in white paint ahead of the magazine assembly, with sling swivels and a flat buttplate numbered "852". A manufacturing contract for the Model 1892 was signed, but it was quickly abandoned when the Mauser Model 1893 was presented to the Spanish Government. The consignor informs us that this rifle was part of the collection of Alfons Mauser (1872-1927), son of Wilhelm Mauser and nephew of Paul von Mauser.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 70% of the original blue is present, with rust and pitting concentrated around the muzzle, barrel bands and magazine, as well as some light handling marks and spotting overall. The stock is fine, with a chip absent from around the upper tang, and a number of dents and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
