Description:

Manufactured circa 1843 to 1846 by N.P. Ames of Springfield, Massachusetts, with a total production of about 4,250. The lock is marked "WM JENKS" at the rear and "N.P. AMES/SPRINGFIELD/MASS" behind the hammer. "WM JENKS" followed by "USN/RP/P/1845" on top of the barrel at the breech. There are "RP" and "JL" cartouches on the left of the stock. Features include the integral blade front sight on the foremost of the two brass barrel bands, the integral notch sight on the top of the lever, brass trigger guard with saddle ring, and the brass buttplate on the nearly full length, straight wrist, walnut stock. The loading aperture has been enlarged for use with paper cartridges and the barrel rifled.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 85% plus of the plum-brown finish, faint case color patterns on breech, and an attractively aged patina on the brass with the balance a smooth grey patina. The sanded and refinished wood is very good with a few light handling marks, a few round hole repairs, and barely visible cartouches. Mechanically excellent.
