Description:

The Model 1836 was the final U.S. martial pistol produced using the flintlock system. It was the standard issue handgun in the Mexican War and continued to be used into the Civil War. Many collectors consider this model to be the best of all U.S. martial flintlock pistols. It features brass blade and dished oval sights, a swivel button head ramrod, side plate extension barrel band, cap with tang that extends up to the barrel tang, and detachable brass flash pan. The upper left side of the barrel is marked "US./JH/P," and single letter inspection marks are on the left flat and some of the other components. "US./R. JOHNSON/MIDDN CONN/1843" is on the lock. It is mounted on a smooth walnut stock with "JJC" and "WAT" cartouches stamped on the left flat.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall. The barrel and other bright components have some light oxidation and scattered light pitting and gray patina. The lock has dark patterns of original case colors. The brass flashpan has dark aged patina. The fine stock has crisp cartouches, some mild dings and pressure marks, and smooth reoiled finish. Mechanically fine.
