Description:

William W. Wetmore built fine rifles, many designed for use with Picket bullets, in the mid to late 19th century. He was also the co-inventor of a magazine system for the Springfield trapdoor, worked for Smith & Wesson, and was one of the two men tasked by Winchester with designing a revolver to compete with Colt. This target rifle is a clear indicator of his high quality work and features a very rarely seen rosewood stock accented by five silver inlays with various engraving pattern. It has a full length scope, false muzzle, "W.W. WETMORE/LEBANON N.H." on the upper left flat, engraved lock, spurred German silver trigger guard, double set triggers, long trigger plate with engraved finial, pewter forend cap, engraved silver wedge escutcheons, ornate silver side plate with engraved scrollwork and animals, engraved silver cheekpiece plate with panoply of arms, patriotic engraved bald eagle and banner inlay on the right side of the butt, and checkered wrist on the unusual rosewood stock.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with gray and brown patina on the barrel and lock along with mild oxidation and wear, attractive natural aged patinas on the furniture and silver accents, and some scattered scratches and marks. The stock is also very good and has moderate wear in the fine checkering, small pressure marks and scratches, glossy surfaces, and slight flaking at the bolster. The scope is fair with gray and brown patina and foggy optics. Mechanically excellent.
