The accompanying Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter lists this rifle with a 28 inch octagon barrel in .38-56 caliber, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Swiss buttplate and Lyman front and rear sights when received in the warehouse on June 24, 1890 and shipped the same day. The barrel has a dovetail beaded blade front sight, filler block in the rear sight slot, two-line address marking and "38-56 WCF" at the breech. There is also a Lyman tang sight. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and serial number. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured and checkered walnut. The rare special order stock has a raised cheekpiece, ebony grip insert and nickel plated Swiss buttplate. According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, "The cheekpiece stock…was produced in very limited numbers on any models." The left side of the lower tang is marked "330 XXX." "330" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate. The combination of deluxe/special order features makes this Model 1886 a rare example.

Fine. The barrel, magazine and bolt retain 50% thinned original blue finish. The buttplate retains 30% original nickel plating. The remaining surfaces retain 40% plus original case colors. The wood is fine with a few long scratches, otherwise some minor handling evidence and crisp checkering overall. The action needs work as the hammer does not hold at the half and full cock positions.
