Description:

Manufactured in 1901. According to the consignor, this musket will factory letter as being chambered in .32-40 caliber and having globe front (currently a blade), sporting rear and Lyman tang (currently absent) sights when shipped on April 26, 1901. High Wall Muskets are rarely encountered chambered in .32-40. In fact, we have not cataloged any other High Wall muskets in .32-40 caliber. This is a first model musket as identified by the two barrel bands retained by band springs and the lack of finger grooves on the forearm. The barrel is marked with the two-line address (partially obscured by the rear barrel band) and "32-40." A cleaning rod is carried in the forearm, and there are sling swivels on the underside of the front barrel band and buttstock. The lower tang has the patent date marking and the serial number, and the upper tang is blank. Formerly of the Peter and Patty Murray collection.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 95% plus refinished blue remains showing some high edge wear. The remaining surfaces retain 95% original case colors. The revarnished wood is fine with a long hairline stress crack near the upper tang, some splintering along the ramrod channel and some minor handling evidence. There are five holes drilled in the forearm (reason unknown) with each hole plugged before the forearm was finished. Mechanically excellent.
