Manufactured in 1881 as a second model featuring a dust cover guide rail attached by two screws to the receiver and dust cover with serrated finger grip on the rear. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, and casehardened finish when received in the warehouse on September 19, 1881, and shipped the next day. Blade/globe flip up front and replacement two leaf notch rear (flip up leaf absent and dovetail widened) sights on a barrel stamped with the two-line address/patent dates information ahead of the rear sight and British proofs at the breech. The model designation is stamped on the upper tang, and the serial number is on the lower tang. The nicely figured and checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have an ebony grip insert and trapdoor buttplate (cleaning rod not included). The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX 4015" the stock inlet and buttplate are both marked "4015".

Very good plus, retains 25% original blue finish and faint traces of original case colors in the sheltered areas with the balance a smooth silver-grey or brown patina. There is some cold blue near the replace rear sight. The finely figured wood has some minor scratches and dings scattered throughout and a minor scuff in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
