Description:

Heinrich Genhart of Liege designed these interesting turret guns and pistols in the 1850s and received patents for the design in 1853 in Belgium and 1857 in the U.S.. They are known to have been displayed at World's Fairs, including the Centennial Exposition (1876) and Columbian Exposition (1893) in the U.S.. They fire tube primed metallic cartridges which are held in the ten-round turret and struck from below by the hammer. The lever on the right side cocks the hammer and also slides the barrel forwards and back. The rear of the barrel fits into the face of the turret creating a tighter gas seal. The turret is revolved by hand, and a small button on the right side releases the stop. The barrel has a dovetail for a front sight. The turret has "+H. GENHART +/BREVET" on top, "crown/N" over the oval Liege proof between two of the chambers, and "65" and "5" on the bottom. "13" and another faint number are marked on the trigger guard finial, and "1269" is marked on the heel. The barrel is smoothbore. It appears to have been assembled using some parts from an old military musket or rifle-musket and has a non-standard lever, pinned reinforcement panels, and a blackened stock. The gun was formerly in the famed Mark Aziz collection and was displayed at an American Society of Arms Collectors meeting a number of years ago.

Rating Definition:

Good with dark mottled brown and gray patina, chipped edge of the turret, aged patina and traces of some silver on the brass components, blackened side panels and stock, and various chips, cracks and scrapes on the stock. Mechanically fine.
