Offered here is an extraordinary multiple panel scene engraved Savage Model 1895 lever action rifle. The accompanying copy of the Savage ledger indicates factory records are blank for this serial number, leaving one to assume that the rifle was assembled from parts on hand and was not intended for resale. Although the rifle falls into the Model 1899 serial number range, this rifle is built with a left over 1895 frame Marlin manufactured for Savage and has been upgraded with a Model 1899 jeweled bolt. The barrel has the Model 1895 legend featuring the 1893 patent dates, a factory installed brass chamber plug for use in public displays and combination Beach and Lyman two-leaf sights. The factory engraved receiver features fine scrollwork on a punch dot background, scroll borders and five various game scene vignettes. The engraving is very similar to patterns used by Marlin engravers and was probably done by an Ulrich. A folding peep sight is mounted on the upper tang. Nicely figured deluxe straight grip stock featuring fancy checkering and a Colt hard rubber buttplate which appears to be original. Purportedly, this rifle was formerly in the famed Alan Mabe collection in the 1950s. At the time Mabe had the largest Savage collection of its type in private hands.

Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 95% plus original blue finish with thinning on the balance. The receiver retains 98% plus original blue. The engraving is crisp. 70% original muted case colors remain on the lever. The wood is very fine with a stress crack near the upper tang, minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Bore is factory plugged (see above). Mechanically excellent. A must have for the serious Savage collector!
