Part of a line of revolver-type long arms, the revolving rifle enjoyed some commercial success, but in many ways was ahead of its time; though mechanically sound, the design was not truly effective as a percussion weapon. The breech end of the barrel and frame feature factory floral scroll engraving with light patterns of floral scroll on the cylinder, hammer and trigger guard. The loading lever is hand-checkered, usually only reserved for higher end deluxe engraved presentation Colt arms. The top strap is marked "ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." with fancy brackets on each end, and the marking ahead of it is illegible. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and buttplate toe (very faint). It's unknown if the buttplate matches, but it is factory engraved at the heel. Dovetail front sight with a brass blade and an elevation adjustable folding rear sight mounted on the breech end of the barrel. Half forearm with engraved silver plated brass forend cap and wedge escutcheons, wooden ramrod with a round brass head, period added bayonet lug 3 1/2 inches back of the muzzle and smooth straight grip stock with iron carbine style buttplate with a small compartment (empty). Comes with a Weyersberg bayonet (21 3/4 inch blade) with scabbard.

Fair with a mottled brown and gray patina on the metal surfaces. There is some minor oxidation on the barrel, and buttplate with numerous minor dents on the cylinder. There is normal flash pitting on the upper areas around the cylinder. The oversize period custom made replacement wood shows some scattered minor dents and scratches. The top strap marking is mostly legible, and most of the engraving is clear. The action is excellent. Bayonet is very good. This is an interesting, factory engraved Colt revolving rifle that could tell quite a story!
