Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1863 and selected for engraving by the factory as indicated by the "E" by the main serial number locations. The engraving matches others known by Master Engraver Gustave Young, note particularly the use of a eagle head amongst the scrollwork on the left by the wedge and the wolf head pattern on the hammer. The traditional scrollwork throughout is of course also his style and is backed by finely textured punch dot backgrounds and accented by border, shell, and floral motifs. The hammer does not have the dots often seen on his guns that indicate the amount of time dedicated to engraving them. The barrel has a post front sight and the standard roll-stamped New York address. The frame also has the stamped "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left, and a "7" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard. The cylinder has the standard stagecoach holdup scene. The grip is finished with a high polish "piano" varnish. The case contains some lead balls, a single sided eagle pattern Colt pocket powder flask, Colt patent dual cavity bullet mold, and a cap tin.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with subtle original case colors on the frame and loading lever and otherwise a smooth artificial gray-brown patina on the barrel and cylinder, traces of original silver plating and otherwise natural aged patina on the grip straps, mostly crisp engraving and markings, distinct cylinder scene, isolated minor pitting, and mild overall wear. The grip is very fine and has nearly all of the glossy varnish, minor nicks and scratches, and light edge wear. Mechanically excellent. The restored case and accessories are very good with mild storage wear including a chip on the case lid.
