Description:

The engraving on this revolver is very similar to others identified as engraved by Gustave Young for the Colt factory in "The Book of Colt Engraving" by Wilson as well as other examples we have seen from his shop. A small "." is marked by the main serial numbers which was used by the factory to signify revolvers receiving engraving and/or special finishing. The serial numbers are matching. The barrel has a band of engraving at the muzzle, a small post/cone front sight, hand engraved "Saml Colt" in Gothic script with ornate borders, and traditional scrollwork on the side flats that includes a small bird face on the left side above the loading lever screw. The loading lever has coordinating scrollwork on the sides. The frame has essentially full coverage scroll engraving and the engraved "COLTS/PATENT" marking found on Young engraved revolvers. The cylinder has the standard stagecoach scene. The hammer has the wolf head motif and scrollwork. The grip straps have scroll, shell, and border engraving. The deluxe highly figured walnut grip is finished with a high polish varnish finish.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 98% plus of the bright period replated nickel remaining, the vast majority of the glossy varnish on the highly figured grip, crisp engraving and markings, and general minor handling and storage wear. Mechanically functions, but cylinder spins freely when at half cock.
