Description:

This revolver is pictured and discussed on page 152 of "Colt Brevete Revolvers" by Marcot and Paxton. It was manufactured abroad and proofed in Liege, possibly as part of the agreements Colt made with foreign manufacturers as part of their efforts to hold back foreign competition and outright forgeries. Swayze in "'51 Colt Navies" discusses these arrangements and revolvers in detail. The engraved cylinder scene on this revolver is very similar to those on Navy revolvers by L. Ghaye and N. Gilon and show an interpretation of Colt's Dragoon revolver scene and has an inscribed "colts/patent" marking. The cylinder also has Liege proofs. The barrel has a post front sight, "COLT/BREVETE", and "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW-YORK CITY}." The second marking is inscribed rather than stamped. The wedge and wedge screw are different than a Colt Model 1851 Navy. The trigger guard has a squareback bow, and the grip angle is a little different than a standard Colt. "9" or "99" are marked on some components, and "3113" is on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, and trigger guard. The trigger guard also has "DR" marked ahead of the serial number to the side. "JV" is on the back of the frame on the left. The grip is nicely figured European walnut.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 50% original blue on the barrel, light original case colors on the loading lever, fairly bright frame and cylinder with light brown and gray patina, minor oxidation and pitting, patches of original silver plating in the protected areas of the grip frame, aged patina on the brass, and minor marks and scratches. The grip is very good and has attractive figure, minor dents and scratches, and light edge wear. Mechanically excellent.
