Description:

This trapdoor carbine was manufactured around 1873 and thus was manufactured well-before the Battle of Little Bighorn. It is believed that most of the 7th Cavalry carbines were in the 33000-43700 range. Many trapdoor carbines were used extensively by the U.S. Cavalry throughout the Indian Wars and also fell into the hands of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and other Native Americans. This example has the standard markings and features including the 1873-1877 period, and a faint "ESA" cartouche without a year.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains strong traces of the original blue finish with the balance a smooth grey patina with some artificial browning visible under the forward portion of the barrel. Varnish/oil staining is visible on the lock and breech, pitting on the buttplate, and some brown patina around the hammer. The reoiled wood is fine with some scattered minor dings, a faint correct "ESA" cartouche, and sharp "circle P" stamp on bottom,. Mechanically excellent. All in all, a very solid representative Custer Battle Era Springfield 1873 Carbine!
