Description:

The barrel is cut for a now absent three-prong false muzzle and has globe and notch sights, "J. BIXLER LAFAYETTE IND/1415/WARRANTED" on top followed by two taps with screws, and a "6" or "9" ahead of the bolster on the right. The upper tang has taps likely for peep mounting. The lock is unmarked. It has double set triggers. The furniture is all German silver. The ramrod is absent. John Bixler established his shop in the 1840s and then worked in partnership with Samuel Iddings in Lafayette, Indiana, from around 1850 to the 1880s and again on his own until around 1890. His son worked as a gun dealer until World War I. Bixler and Iddings were both originally from Ohio and were arrested in 1863 on charges of assisting Confederate agents in Indiana that were found to be untrue and returned to their gunshop.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with dark brown patina and varnish/oil staining along the barrel, lighter patina on the lock and upper tang, minor staining on the German silver, moderate pitting on the bolster, milder pitting elsewhere, and some tool marks and scratches. The stock is fine and has most of the glossy finish, scattered minor pressure marks and scratches, and light edge wear. Mechanically fine.
