Josiah Clutz (b. 1831) was a Massillon, Ohio, gunsmith active into the 1880s and specialized in percussion half stock rifles. In the 1880s, he was also a game warden for Stark County, Ohio. The barrel is turned down at the muzzle and has a modern globe front sight, rear dovetail filler block, "J. KLUTZ/MASSILLON, O." maker's mark, "8" on the left flat at the breech, and engraved breech plug and tang. The lock is also engraved and is stamped "HUNTER" below the bolster. It is equipped with double set triggers. The flame pattern stock has a pewter forend cap, German silver pin escutcheons, and brass wear plate and other furniture.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a plum brown mix of faded original blue finish and brown patina along the bare, gray patina on the lock, minor oxidation, aged patina on the furniture, and general light scratches and marks. The stock has attractive flame patterns, slight chips at the top and bottom of the lock mortise, and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
