Description:

John Neill of Belfast advertised himself as a former workman of Purdey and appears to have been active from at least 1831 to 1877. The barrel has an approximately 16 gauge bore, 1 1/4 inch muzzle opening, "BELFAST" and a flourish of scrollwork on top at the breech, border engraving at the breech, and pre-1813 Birmingham style proofs flanking an "IN" maker's mark on the upper left. The breech has floral engraving as does the "Jno NEILL" signed lock and most of the furniture. The wedge plates and thumb escutcheon are German silver.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with attractively aged patina on the brass and German silver, dark aged patina on the lock, mild marks and scratches, distinct markings and engraving, repaired cracks at the toe, and crisp checkering on the otherwise fine stock. Mechanically excellent.
