Description:

With substantial octagonal to polygonal to round three stage barrel with blackened finish, indistinct stamps at the breech end, rear sight of one standing and two folding leaves, large blade front sight, and large recoil stop protruding through the underside of the forearm. Flat bevelled lock marked “POTZDAMMAGAZ” below the priming pan and engraved with the monogram “S&D” on the lower edge for Splittgerber & Daum who ran the Potsdam Arsenal between 1723 and 1740. The three quarter length stock is possibly made from birch and is covered in a veneer of bone or flattened staghorn panels engraved throughout with woodland scenes inhabited by hunters, some with guns, others on horseback with spears, with many hunting dogs chasing boar and stags, with other animals present including lions, elephant and what appears to be a giraffe. Smaller animals such as birds and rabbits can be found on the underside of the stock, and a small church or chapel building is depicted in front of the lock plate. Regulation iron trigger guard, side plate, buttplate, ramrod pipes and original iron ramrod with swelled tip. A seldom encountered German military rampart gun with unique engraved veneered stock decoration that almost certainly dates to the late 18th or early 19th century.

Rating Definition:

Good. The iron parts with blackened applied finish, the exposed metal has a dull patina where it shows through the applied finish. From what can be seen the metal parts are discolored rather than pitted. The lock plate has been partially cleaned bright. The stock veneer has yellowed over time. This veneer is made up of many small panels glued to the original stock. One of these panels is missing from the toe of the butt, one is chipped on the right side of the heel of the butt and another is chipped on the left side at the tip of the forearm. The engraving is clear throughout although somewhat naïve in its execution.
