Description:

Only an estimated 1,200 No. 1 pistols were manufactured by Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1854 and 1855. These pistols, along with the less than 500 larger No. 2 pistols, represent an important step in the evolution of lever action firearms. This design was later manufactured in slightly altered for by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and New Haven Arms Company before being the basis of the famous Henry rifle which was ultimately refined by Winchester to become the legendary Winchester Model 1866. The barrel on this pistol features the two-line address on the top flat, "CAST-STEEL" on the right flat and the two-line patent date on the left flat. The receiver has the standard Rococo style acanthus and floral engraving patterns. The lever and both grip panels are numbered to the gun.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. Scarce traces of original blue finish remain in the protected areas found on the barrel and magazine tube, otherwise the pistol has a mixed brown and gray patina. The grips are very good with a small surface chip missing near the bottom on the left panel and a number of handling/storage marks. Mechanically fine. A historic link in the evolution of lever action firearms that is a must have for any serious antique firearms collector.
