Description:

This is an excellent example of a Civil War production Smith & Wesson No. 1, Second Issue tip-up revolver with mahogany case. The revolver has a high polish blue finish with casehardened hammer and trigger and two-piece, varnished rosewood grips. The top of the barrel rib is roll-stamped: "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD. MASS", in one line. The seven-shot cylinder is roll-stamped with 1855, 1859 and 1860 patent dates. The serial number is on the butt. The revolver back strap is inscribed: "Orville Bassett U.S.N." in a single line. The revolver is complete with a mahogany case with purple velvet lining. The case lid is inlaid with a rectangular brass plate. The case interior has a movable rosewood partition for cartridge and gun separation.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 90% plus of the original high polish blue finish on the barrel. The frame retains 98% original silver plating now having a pleasing darkened patina. The cylinder has some scattered light pitting and some minor polishing marks. The hammer and trigger retain nearly all of the original casehardened finish. The rosewood grips retain 97% of the original high gloss "piano" varnish finish with some minor handling marks. The barrel marking and back strap inscription are extremely crisp. The patent markings on the cylinder are legible. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The case is in fine condition with minimal exterior and interior wear. This is an outstanding Civil War production Smith & Wesson No. 1 revolver in high condition with Civil War period U.S. Navy inscription and case.
