Description:

Manufactured from 1868 to 1875. This example has a New York retailer engraving consisting of a beautifully executed floral scroll engraving on a punch dot background. The serial number on the frame is inside a large fancy line and dot panel. A starburst is engraved ahead of the trigger. The S&W one-line barrel rig marking is surrounded by a light engraving. The back strap is inscribed "Presented to Phillip E. Clarke/By his friends. July 1st 1874." At the time of this writing Phillip E. Clarke remained unidentified. The barrel and cylinder have matching assembly numbers. The partitioned case has a John P. Lovell & Sons retailer paper label on the interior of the lid and contains a sealed box of Winchester .32 short cartridges and loose rounds of "US" head stamped cartridges. The top of the lid has a brass inlay with a "PEC" monogram.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period embellished and replated. The barrel has nearly all of the age darkened silver plating. The hammer and cylinder retain 70% of the gold plating. The frame has a bright appearance. The grips are excellent with highly attractive color. The action does not function properly as cylinder does not always rotate when action is cycled. The relined case is fine showing some minor handling/storage marks, some worn lining and retaining most of the label.
