Description:

This is an example of a highly sought after Colt Single Action Army Revolver that is chambered for the .44 rimfire cartridge and has an early three digit serial number ("944"). Only 1,863 Single Action Army revolvers were chambered in this caliber. The .44 rimfire series was introduced in 1875, and they were serial numbered in their own range from 1 to 1,863. Colt sold most of the .44 RF production to South and Central America due to a limited acceptance on the American market where they saw hard and abusive use. Surviving examples are scarce. The barrel has the one-line Hartford address on top, the frame has the two-line patent date marking stamped on the left side, and the trigger guard has "44 CAL" stamped on the left side. The ejector rod has a crescent style head. Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, and barrel.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Faded traces of original blue finish remain on the replaced ejector rod housing and some replated nickel remains on the hammer, otherwise, the revolver has a smooth gray patina mixed with pitting. The shortened barrel has a replacement front sight. The grips are fair with a crack near the bottom (left side), worn high edges, couple small chips and divots and minor dings and scratches. 40% of the period applied nickel plating remains on the hammer. Mechanically fine.
