Description:

Manufactured in 1928, this revolver includes a later production brown box with gold label, "Handling the Handgun" instruction sheet, and a bristle brush. Markings and features are standard, save the addition of a pair of replacement smooth (non-medallion) pearl grips and the inscription on the right side "SERGEANT/L.C. SALZ/HIGH PISTOL SCORE/DEPARTMENT/N.J.S.P. 1928./98.33". Records indicate that L.C. Salz is Louis C. Salz of the New Jersey State Police. Born in 1894, Salz was a member of the New York National Guard c.1914-1917, noted as seeing service on the U.S.-Mexico border, followed by U.S. Army service in 1918, ending with an appointment as Second Lieutenant with the Field Artillery Reserve. He joined the State Police in 1922, and by 1930 was noted as a handgun instructor at the NJSP's training school in Trenton; an article on the school in the December 1930 issue of Popular Mechanics features two colorized images of Sgt. Salz in that role. In 1942 he returned to military service, joining the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps; a relatively unique outfit, the CIC recruited heavily from law enforcement and similar backgrounds, and often operated in a "plain clothes" fashion, wearing civilian suits or rank-free uniforms with special badges. Among the CIC's duties was vetting personnel prior to accessing classified material, running down saboteurs, and acting as security for the Manhattan Project, including escorting bomb material from Los Alamos to Tinian prior to the deployment of nuclear weapons against Japan. Following the war, CIC men were involved in Operation Paperclip (the extraction of German scientists from Europe), hunted down black marketeers and former regime members in occupied countries, and went back into the field for the Korean War. Salz left the Army in 1955 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and also attempted to retire from the NJSP at the same time; wartime laws meant that he was still a member in good standing with the Police for the duration of his Army service, and in fact was not permitted to retire from the Police until he was fully separated from the Army. His exact post-Army activities are unknown, but he was involved in a set of court cases into the 1960s to be recognized as disabled from ailments suffered during his service time.

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 70% of the original blue finish, showing bright edge wear, mild spotting and handling marks, a few scuffs on the cylinder and a gray patina on the grip straps; generally consistent for a well cared for but actively used handgun. The oversize replacement grips are very good, with a few small edge chips. The box shows a few minor rubs and wear. Mechanically excellent.
