Description:

LePage is one of the most famous firearms manufacturers in French history. The firm remained in the same family for nearly two centuries and manufactured arms for multiple French kings and emperors. They manufactured arms for Napoleon I and III, as noted on this gun's locks and barrels, and are known to have updated guns made for King Louis XVI for Napoleon. The barrels have a gold bands at the muzzles, gold accents around the blade front sight, "Le Page A Paris" and "Arqer de L'Empereur" in ornate golden script on top of the barrels in the breech section, additional gold accents at the breech, and engraving on the breech. The locks have "Le Page/A Paris" (right), "ARQUEBUSR/DE L'EMPEREUR" (left), detailed engraved hounds on the tails, and nicely sculpted and matched hammers and were originally flintlocks. The upper tang is dished for a rear sight and finely engraved with floral patterns. The furniture is likewise engraved en suite with primarily floral and scroll patterns. The wedge escutcheons have double eagle heads. Swans are featured among the patterns on the buttplate tang and trigger guard bow. The stock has checkering with carved borders on the forend and wrist, scroll patterns and a grotesque face along with a nickel-silver thumb plate at the top of the wrist/breech section, a detailed carved boar on the bottom of the wrist, nice figure, a wide cheek rest, and a raised relief carved scene of a fox and fowl on the left. The golden eagle was adopted by Napoleon as his symbol and inspired by its use by the Romans, and swans were beloved by Empress Josephine and is seen as her emblem and was used throughout her home at Chateau de Malmaison. A leather sling is suspended from the sling swivels.

Rating Definition:

Very good with most of the original gold on the barrels including essentially all of the gold on the markings, dark brown patina and mild surface oxidation along the balance of the barrels, mottled gray patina on the locks and furniture, distinct engraving, and mild overall wear. The stock is fine and has mostly crisp checkering and carving, a few minor cracks on the forend, repairs in the fancy grain at the toe, nice figure, and general minor scratches and pressure marks. The sling is complete and has moderate wear. Mechanically fine.
