A) U.S. Colt Model 1908 Pocket Hammerless Pistol, with Matching Box, Extra Magazine, Edged Weapons and Other Items

Manufacturer: Colt
Model: 1908
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 380 ACP
Barrel: 3 3/4 inch round
Finish: blue
Grip: walnut
Stock:
Item Views: 1897
Item Interest: Very Active
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 284
Class: Curio & Relic Handgun
Description:

Manufactured in 1942. Fixed sights, with "U.S. PROPERTY" on the right side of the frame in addition to the standard markings, full blue finish, and checkered grips with Colt medallions. The included box is of plain brown "kraft" style construction, hand-numbered to match on the bottom, "Lt. James P. Parker/NAVTECMISEU/Paris" on the lid, with an instruction sheet and extra magazine. Three edged weapons and assorted items: U.S. PAL M3 fighting knife (third pattern) with a non-regulation leather sheath hand marked “J. Parker”. This knife was identified as “sheath knife” in the original requisition form for items issued to Lt Parker on his arrival at NAVTECMISEU; an Australian made bayonet for an Enfield rifle with sheath and original packaging; and a second pattern Eickhorn Kriegsmarine dagger with sheath. Other items include: two German War Merit Crosses (2nd class w/o swords) with ribbons and three original brown paper packets; two 1939 2nd Class Iron Crosses with short ribbons modified for breast or buttonhole wear; U.S. Waltham 8-day aircraft clock modified to act as a desk clock by addition of a wooden mounting base; a U.S marked WWII olive drab canvas bag (probably UM-371) for carrying M-1 ammo stenciled “TWEEDIE/1944 inside the top flap. The items in the grouping were the property of Lieutenant Parker who was assigned to the Naval Technical Mission in Europe by The Naval Office of the Coordinator of Research and Development where he was an intelligence analyst. Initiated in 1945, the Mission (NAVTECMISEU) was dispatched to Europe to study German material and manufacturing techniques, with a premium on anything that could be put to work against Japan. The Mission operated in both formerly occupied territories (the assorted German naval facilities on the French Atlantic coast being of particular interest) as well as in Germany itself. With the exception of the PAL M3 knife, the exact circumstances of acquisition are unrecorded, but the 1908 Colt was likely Parker’s issued service pistol and the remainder of the lot a mix of issued equipment and field acquired trophies and souvenirs. The three pistols were included in a 2007 Exhibit with Catalog at the National Firearms Museum of the National Rifle Association in Vienna, Virginia. It was titled "Arsenal of Democracy" and included a curated group of weapons and militaria brought back to the U.S. by veterans after WWII.

Rating Definition:

The pistol is fine, with 80% of the original blue finish, showing bright areas, spotting, scattered scratches and scuffs, and a few flecks of yellow paint. The grips are very fine, with some minor dings and verdigris. A few edge tears are forming in the otherwise very good box. The clock is currently non-functional, the bayonet is excellent, the knife and dagger show wear and oxidization, and the satchel has some light stains and a possible replaced strap. Mechanically excellent.
