Description:

The barrel has the standard combination bayonet stud/front sight, ordnance proofs and a small "W" near the breech, and "M=CHESHIRE" on top just ahead of the breech. The thumb escutcheon has "C/48". The lock has "TOWER" on the tail and the Georgian cipher at the center along with an ordnance mark. "16" is marked on the trigger guard. The muskets provenance and the barrel marking are not documented, but it may relate to the Cheshire Regiment (22nd Regiment of Foot) which fought during General Wolfe's famous victory over Marquis de Montcalm at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham during the French & Indian War and served during the American Revolution from the Battle of Bunker Hill until their surrender at Yorktown.

Rating Definition:

Fair with an applied artificial dark brown finish, moderate pitting, chipped mid-ramrod pipe, absent sling swivels, and dark aged patina on most of the brass. The refinished/restored stock has multiple cracks and repairs and general scrapes and dings. Some of the fittings are proud to the wood. Mechanically fine.
