Developed for sale to the Ottoman Empire, the Model 1887 is a variant of the Model 1871/84 repeating rifle, integrating an additional locking lug at the rear of the bolt. The present example is a very scarce working prototype with no Farsi markings and German proof marks. Blade front and three-leaf rear sights, with "1887" on the right side of the receiver and the one line Mauser address on the left. Smooth straight wrist stock, with a pair of "MD" monograms stamped into the left side, a cleaning rod in a channel on the left side, sling swivels and a flat buttplate. Provenance: This rifle was loaned by the consignor to the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, England.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 80% of the original finish, with mild spotting and discoloration on the bright components, and some spotting and areas of brown patina on the blued components. The stock is fine, with a number of dents and scuffs. Mechanically excellent.
