Description:

Manufactured with limited markings, this breech loading centerfire rifle uses an obsolete French musket as the basis for the experimental conversion, with the original cuts for the lock hardware and side plate filled in with wood. Notes from the consignor attribute the arm as a French prototype c.1840. Blade front and two-leaf rear sight graduated "200", "400" and "600". A repeating number "31" is present on multiple components, and a second number (either "136" or "156") on the stock, trigger plate and buttplate, but no markings are present on the lock or bolt. The stock has traces of a circular "PARIS" stamp around a rooster on the right side, with a dished-out cheek rest and a flat steel buttplate. Provenance: This rifle was loaned by the consignor to the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, England.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel, lock and bolt have been lightly cleaned, with some mild spotting and handling marks overall. The stock is very good, with some light scratches and dents. Mechanically fine.
