Approximately 6,500 Remington Model 1865 pistols were manufactured from 1866 to 1870 for the U.S. Navy, but many were converted to "Model 1867s" in the 1870s by converting them for centerfire ammunition, shortening the barrels, and changing the spur trigger out for a traditional trigger and trigger guard. This example remains in original Model 1865 format and is numbered "48" on the left side of the back strap and inside the grip in the front strap mortise. The barrel has the anchor marking and a "pinched" front sight. The left side of the frame has the two-line patent information. There are no inspector marks on the frame or grip.

Good with dark brown patina throughout, scattered minor oxidation overall with light scratches and dings. The wood is very good with strong oiled finish, light pressure marks and scrapes, and minor edge wear. Mechanically fine.
