Description:

Around 5,000 Model 1871 pistols were purchased by the U.S. Government from Remington in the 1870s and 1880s. This example has the standard markings and features including Curtis R. Stickney's script "CRS" cartouche on the left side of the grip. The "5239" is marked in the front strap mortise of the grip and the left side of the back strap, and the left side of each grip strap has "5592." These pistols were a strange selection for a martial pistol given the prevalence of revolvers by this time. Nonetheless, they are powerful sidearms and are incredibly reliable and accurate just like Remington's rolling block rifles.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 20% original casehardened finish, traces of original blue finish, gray and brown patina on the balance, some light oxidation, oil staining on the breechblock and hammer, and mild overall wear. The wood is fine and has strong oiled finish, a distinct cartouche, and minor surface scratches and dings. Mechanically needs work (breech will not open all the way).
