Description:

After multiple stints of incarceration in the Texas State prison system between 1924 and 1930, Louie "Cowboy" Traylor established his first blacksmith shop in Sandy Point, Texas, later relocating to Houston. It is unclear whether these spurs were made during his time in the penitentiary or later at one of his blacksmithing locations. They unmounted stainless steel upturned heel bands with large lateral buttons mounted with the initials "FHA" in copper. They have goose-neck shanks ending in spoked rowels. The smooth leather straps are unmarked. Provenance: Discovered in 2008 in the collection of a South Texas saddle maker by his grandson, Charles Hollimon Collection 2008-2015, Bruce Bartlett Collection. Heel band width: 1 1/4" Shanks: 2 1/2" Rowel diameter: 2 5/8" Heel opening: 3 3/8".

Rating Definition:

Very fine, showing a mostly bright finish with some scattered light handling marks/wear consistent with use and some light corrosion on the rowels. The leather straps are very good with some minor wear, scattered cracking, and some pressure marks.
