This is a much sought after example of an etched panel Colt Single Action Army revolver. The barrel has the one-line address stamped on top and the etched panel "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" on the left side. This etched barrel panel marking was officially replaced by the Colt factory in the early 120,000 serial number range with the much easier to produce and larger roll-stamping. The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver in .44-40 caliber and blue finish and barrel length and type of stocks not listed (usually indicating 7 1/2 inches and walnut respectively) when shipped to Simmons Hardware Co. of St. Louis on February 9, 1882. The underside of the barrel is stamped with a small "44" for the caliber. The frame has the three-line patent dates marking, and "44 CF" is stamped on the trigger guard. Matching numbers are found on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder and barrel.

Fine. 40% original blue finish and 30% plus of the original case colors remain with the balance a smooth brown patina. The etched panel is legible. The grip is very fine with some edge wear, minor handling marks and most of the original varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent.
