A) Fine Miller & Val. Greiss Mauser 1898 Takedown Stutzen Sporting Rifle Reportedly Made For A German Prince

Description:

In addition to the Miller & Val. Greiss serial number, this rifle is also struck with the original Mauser Oberndorf Sporting Department serial number "21407/y" indicating manufacture in circa 1908 and bears a crowned monogram almost certainly of Prince Georg of Bavaria (1880-1943). The blued octagonal to round Krupp steel barrel has a full length raised matted sighting rib signed “MILLER & VAL. GREISS. K.G.L. BAYR. HOFGEWEHRFABRIK – MÜNCHEN” within a panel, import marked on underside, fitted with an adjustable standing rear sight and bead front sight, and engraved with a band of stylized foliage at the breech. Casehardened receiver with matted front ring, the sidewall and rear bridge fitted with bases for quick detachable scope rings, checkered flattened bolt handle, and rear tang incorporating a sprung folding aperture peep sight. Nicely figured 14 inch full length stock with raised cheekpiece and finely checkered pistol grip. The underside of the butt inset with a silver oval escutcheon engraved with the crowned monogram "G" in high German script. Casehardened trigger guard with blued spur, casehardened magazine floor plate with lever release, and double set triggers. The stock furniture comprises a steel buttplate with hinged trap cover, the trap containing a takedown cleaning rod and a small nickeled pot, sling mounts fitted with a brown leather sling, and dark horn cap beneath the muzzle. Post 1893 German nitro proof marks, the left side of the barrel marked with ammunition designation “M.88/8.S.” Provenance: Property of a German Prince, the great, great grandchild of Emperor Franz Josef I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 85% original blued finish to the barrel with some minor age related surface spotting. The receiver, bolt, trigger guard and magazine floor plate retaining 90% original strong casehardened finish. The stock has some scattered minor age related storage and handling marks and blemishes. Buttplate with some discoloration. The cleaning rod and what may be a nickeled oil bottle are currently stuck in the apertures under the butt trap cover. Mechanically excellent. The scope rings are not present with the rifle. Mechanically excellent. A fine example of a high quality pre-WWI German sporting rifle with princely provenance.

Similar to “A”, struck with the original Mauser Oberndorf Sporting Department serial number 15199 indicating manufacture in circa 1906 in addition to the Miller & Val. Greiss serial number. With blued octagonal Krupp steel barrel signed “MILLER & VAL. GREISS. K.G.L. BAYR. HOFGEWEHRFABRIK – MÜNCHEN” and import marked on underside. Figured 14 1/4 inch stock with Schnabel tip to the forearm, and a brass mounted cleaning rod mounted beneath the barrel. Post 1893 German nitro proof marks, the right side of the barrel marked with ammunition designation “M88/8 - TMG”. Provenance: Property of a German Prince, the great, great grandchild of Emperor Franz Josef I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 70% faded original blued finish to the barrel with some minor age related rubbing to the hard edges. The bolt retains faded traces of original casehardened finish. The stock has some scattered age related storage and handling marks and bruises throughout. Buttplate with some discoloration. The scope rings are not present with the rifle. Mechanically fine.
