A) Very Fine Belgian Smoothbore Hammer Garden Gun of Flobert Type Made For A German Prince

Description:

Manufactured in circa 1895-1900 and bearing a crowned monogram almost certainly of Prince Heinrich of Bavaria (1880-1943). The blued round barrel has a full length sighting flat engraved with scrollwork towards the tip-up breech and with blued bead front sight and blued standing rear sight. Nickel plated scroll engraved action and hammer, the latter with offset checkered spur. Figured 12 3/4 inch stock with checkered grip and forend carved in relief with a panel of foliage. The wrist fitted with a gold oval escutcheon engraved with the crowned monogram "H" in high German script. Scroll engraved nickel plated flat fronted scrolled trigger guard, nickel plated buttplate and sling mounts. Belgian (Liège) proof marks.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 97% original blued and nickel plated finishes. The engraving is crisp throughout. Mechanically excellent. Minor storage bruising and blemishes to stock, carved panel and checkering crisp. Surely one of the finest quality and condition Flobert-type hammerguns in existence.

Description:

With blued Krupp steel barrels each signed “J.P. SAUER & SOHN”, struck with patent details and Krupp brand marks towards the breeches, stamped with early German proof marks on the underside, and matted raised rib with brass bead front sight and doll’s head extension engraved with a shell. Border and scroll engraved action and back action rebounding locks, the locks respectively signed “MILLER & VAL. GREISS” on the left and “KGL. BAYER. HOFBÜCHSENMACHER MÜNCHEN” on the right. Well figured 14 inch pistol grip stock with checkered grip and forearm, raised cheekpiece, and checkered dark horn buttplate. Provenance: Property of a German Prince, the great, great grandchild of Emperor Franz Josef I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Barrels retaining 50% thinning blued finish, some patches of corrosion marking, crisp engraving to the rib. Action, locks and trigger guard mostly bright with crisp engraving and traces of original faded casehardened finish. Stock is very good with numerous storage and handling bruises, scratches and chips. Horn buttplate worn, cracked and chipped. Mechanically fine.
