Description:

This is an exceptional example of a WWI Luger that was produced under the Treaty of Versailles in the late 1920s era (between 1928 and 1933), that was reissued to one of the various Weimar Navy units during this time frame. These Lugers were originally thought to have been original WWI pistols that were reworked in the post-WWI era; however, they are now termed as actually being an "Alphabet" Luger manufactured from some original WWI parts mixed with some newly manufactured DWM parts. These are typically found bearing commercial proofmarks and chambered in the commercial 7.65 mm Luger cartridge, such as this example. The top of the chamber area was restamped "1920" indicating that it was verified as being issued by the Reichswehr, and the "DWM" logo on the first toggle assembly. The right side of the barrel extension is blank, and the left side and underside of the barrel are both stamped with the early "Crown/N" commercial firing proofs. The Luger has standard extractor and safety markings, and the rear grip strap is correctly stamped with a larger late style large "M/Anchor" indicating reissue to the Weimar Navy, over property number "N. 18". This example still retains both of its matching magazines, both numbered "N. 18", and its original Navy issue holster also bearing the same original markings of a "M/Anchor" and the "N. 18" property markings. The front of the holster is marked "GUSTAV REINHARDT/BERLIN".

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 95% of its correct arsenal blue finish showing even honest wear overall mixed with some minor touch up blue on the left side of the frame, frame rails and front grip strap. The various small parts retain 20% of their original straw colors with some minor enhancement. The grips are in very good condition overall with nice original checkering, minor handling marks overall, and even honest light wear across the tops of the checkering. The holster is also in excellent condition with nice sharp deep markings and a very nice even brown color overall showing minor handling marks, scuffing and scratches with tight stitching. The markings on the Luger are clear and distinct, and it has matching numbers on all the various parts to include both magazine and grips except the firing pin which is correctly unnumbered. A very nice original, extremely rare matching serialized post-WWI Weimar Navy Issue Luger rig. This would be difficult to replace!
