Manufactured in 1900. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a barrel in .30 caliber, Lyman front and rear sights, checkered stock, and hard rubber shotgun buttplate when received in the warehouse on January 3, 1901 and shipped the next day. The rifle was returned to the factory for repair on April 4, 1901 and on January 21, 1902. Although the letter does not list the engraving, the engraving appears to be factory and a period clerical error resulted in the omission of the engraved notation in the factory ledger (It also could have been engraved when it was returned to factory). The receiver features a Winchester scroll engraving on a punch dot background and standard Winchester markings. The blade front sight rests on a "CHRISTY" marked ramp base. The rifle is also fitted with a folding two leaf Lyman rear sight and Lyman receiver sight. The nicely figured forearm and straight grip stock are checkered and feature an ebony forend tip insert and hard rubber Winchester shotgun buttplate. Model 1895s with factory engraving are tough to find. According to Winchester author and expert George Madis, "Engraved Models 95 are very rare; by the time the Model 95 was introduced the cost of engraving had become quite high." Very fine, retaining 85% factory blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. The barrel has been period shortened to the present length. The wood is fine with some minor dings and scratches and some scattered blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
