The accompanying factory lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .40-60 caliber, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock and casehardened finish when received in the warehouse on May 12, 1885 and shipped the same day. The rifle is equipped with a dovetail blade front sight, elevation adjustable rear sight, and Vernier tang peep sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking and "CAL. 40-60". "40-60" is repeated on the cartridge elevator. Mounted on a fancy walnut grain and checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with ebony grip insert and trapdoor buttplate. A five piece cleaning rod is included. The left side of the lower tang is marked "2170 XX." The assembly number "2170" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate.

Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 40% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. 60% original blue finish remains on the dust cover. 50% original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The forend cap hammer, receiver and lever retain 30% plus original case colors. The refinished wood is very good with a spliced repair behind the pistol grip, some minor handling marks and crisp recut checkering overall. Mechanically excellent.
