Description:

This Winchester Model 1895 saddle ring carbine was manufactured in 1920. The carbine has the Type 2 receiver with saddle ring mounted on the left side and distinctive military style folding leaf rear sight, handguard and forearm with grasping groove. The stock has a carbine style steel buttplate with sliding steel trap door. The barrel, receiver, bolt, hammer, lever, buttplate and other components have blue commercial finish. The stock, handguard and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. The barrel has a blued steel front sight blade and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight leaf is graduated to "17", and the left side of the rear sight base is graduated from "1-10". The butt trap contains a Winchester military style bore brush, cord and brass weight. The top of the receiver is stamped with the Winchester oval "W/P" proof mark and the caliber designation ".30/ARMY" in two lines. The upper left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." in one line above the 1895-1907 patent dates. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1895/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT OFF & FGN." in three lines. The serial number is roll-stamped across the bottom of the lower tang in small numerals between the tang screws. The distinctive Model 1895 was the first Winchester rifle with a non-detachable box magazine and the first Winchester lever action rifle chambered for high velocity military cartridges.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This carbine shows only very limited storage and appears to be an un-issued military contract weapon. Several cases of un-fired Model 1895 carbines were imported from Central or South America during the 1950s; this carbine appears to be one of those firearms. The barrel, barrel band, rear sight, receiver, bolt, hammer, trigger, lever and buttplate retain 98% of the original blue finish. The magazine is free from the cycling wear that is typically found on Model 1895 rifles and carbines that have seen any use. The only significant wear on the carbine is a one-inch spot of flaking (touched up with cold blue) on the bottom of the magazine. The stock forearm and handguard remain in excellent, condition with nearly all of the original oil finish. This is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1895 saddle ring carbine.
