Description:

This revolver is identified as pictured on page 246 of "Colt's Pocket '49: Its Evolution Including the Baby Dragoon and Wells Fargo" by Jordan & Watt and as formerly in the Bobby Smith Collection. Though the Model 1849 Pocket was the most popular of all of Colt's percussion revolvers, finding an example from the Civil War era and earlier in exceptional condition like this is very difficult. The revolver was manufactured in 1857 and features a brass cone front sight, the "{ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY}" barrel address, standard patent markings and roll-scene, and all matching serial numbers, including the matching partial serial number properly handwritten in black ink in the back strap mortise of the grip. The fitted contoured case is closely fitted to the revolver and contains an Eley Bros. cap tin, double sided eagle powder flask, brass dual cavity "COLTS/PATENT" bullet mold without a sprue cutter, L-shaped combination tool, and a key.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. 95% plus bright original blue finish remains. The cylinder scene and other markings remain distinct, and the safety pins are complete. The minor blue and case color loss is primarily concentrated on the rear of the cylinder and on the recoil shield, and there is some slight pitting on the former. The silver has a very nice aged patina. There is some minor handling and storage wear, a few dings on and near the wedge, and slight edge wear. The excellent grip has strong original varnish, faint edge wear, and some slight handling and storage marks. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very fine with minor storage wear. This is certainly one of the finer standard Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolvers in this auction.
