Description:

This rare Colt Belt Model Paterson No. 2 revolver with factory case and accessories was manufactured c. 1840. This revolver has a .31 caliber, 5 1/2 inch barrel, five-shot round-back cylinder and straight profile grips. The octagon barrel has a nickel silver, half-moon shaped front sight blade. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: "- Patent Arms M'g Co Paterson N-J Colt's Pt.-" reading from the breech to the muzzle with arrows at either end. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the "horsemen and centaur" scene and the Colt/Horse Head motif. The full serial number is stamped on the inside face of the barrel lug, bottom of the wedge and rear face of the cylinder and the rear face of the spare cylinder. The cylinder turning ring is stamped with the partial serial number "76". All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has a high polish blue finish with varnished walnut grips. The factory case is varnished mahogany with beveled lid and inlaid nickel-silver plate with scalloped edges. The case is lined with dark brown velvet and contains all the proper accessories: (1) spare five-shot, round back cylinder with matching serial number, (2) single, round ball bullet mold with blued blocks and sprue cutter with three turned walnut handles, (3) Paterson combination tool, (4) brass cleaning rod with turned walnut handle, (5) gilt brass capper with lanyard ring embossed with relief Rampant Colt and crossed revolver motif surrounded by "COLT PATENT * PATENT ARMS MANG CO PATERSON, N.J.", (6) gilt brass powder flask/ammunition charger with script Paterson markings on center band and grooved upper and lower rings engraved "G.G. Benjamin" in script on the upper half of the flask body and (7) key.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 80% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel and the legend on the top flat is sharp. The frame, hammer, back strap and cylinder have a mottled silver-gray patina with smooth metal surfaces and traces of blue in protected areas. The cylinder in the revolver shows minimal firing wear and retains nearly all of the delicate roll-engraved markings. The spare cylinder has light-moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples and rear face with small amounts of blue finish and most of the roll-engraved decorations. The barrel muzzle and faces of both cylinders have been polished bright. The reoiled grip is in very good overall condition with traces of the varnish finish. The case is in fair overall condition with two repaired cracks in the lid. The interior is in good overall condition with deep compression marks from the revolver and accessories and some small tears from contact with the spare cylinder, hammer and front sight. The accessories are all original and remain in very good overall condition. This is a very good, original example of a rare factory cased Colt Belt Model Paterson No. 2 revolver with accessories.
