Description:

This rifle was manufactured in 1885 and has the standard sporting sights, the two-line address and patent marking and "44 Cal." on the top of the barrel, "THOs B. BILLINGS" stamped on the left flat at the breech and left side of the wrist, the Rampant Colt trademark on the left side of the receiver, checkered slide handle/forearm, and smooth straight grip stock with a steel rifle buttplate. The history of the Billings markings and the specific man they are for have not been documented. They could be for the Thomas B. Billings recorded in the late 19th century in Los Angeles, California. He was the son of Mary Billings Brown who ran the "Mother Brown" brothel in the area and was himself accused as running a hotel as an "assignation house." He was at risk of being lynched after his sister's husband was killed by her lover in a confrontation in 1883.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 25% plus original blue finish, mostly concentrated on the sides of the frame and the barrel. The balance is mostly smooth brown patina. There are some minor marks and scratches throughout. The forearm is also very good and has crisp checkering and light wear. The buttstock is very good and has some minor chips at the junction with the frame and general light scrapes and pressure marks. Mechanically excellent.
