Description:

Measuring 28 3/4 inches overall, with a 24 1/2 inch blade, iron guard (formerly three-branch, one branch broken off), and a pair of wood grip panels secured with iron nails. A tag from the Williams Auction Company of Washington, D.C., is attached to the guard, attributing the item as having been sold to L.C. Jackson (Texas collector/dealer), and describing it as having been found by a rail worker at the site of the Battle of Perryville several years after the battle, with speculation that it was a Texas Ranger weapon. The largest Civil War battle fought in Kentucky, Perryville was the finale of the Confederate Heartland Offensive of 1862; while Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg (including the 8th Texas Cavalry, aka Terry's Texas Rangers) performed well, Bragg would withdraw South in the aftermath, securing that section of the border for the Union.

Rating Definition:

Relic grade. The metal components have turned a dark, pitted brown, and the grips have shrunken, cracked and split. The blade is bent, with a crack forming halfway up the edge.
