Description:

These New Model 1859 rifles were manufactured from 1859 to 1862 and were most famously issued to the Berdan Sharpshooters. This example falls within the Berdan Sharpshooter range. It has standard markings and features of a New Model 1859 rifle made for the U.S. Navy and has no visible cartouches or inspection markings and is likely one of 2,780 manufactured for the Navy during the Civil War. "160" and "5" have also been stamped on the right side near the front of the comb.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. This rifle appears to have seen little use. The barrel now exhibits mostly smooth brown patina due to fading. Strong original patterns of case colors remain on the lock and patch box, and there is mostly smooth gray and brown patina on the balance along with some spots of mild oxidation. The dark reoiled wood has generally minor age and storage related wear such as minor dings and scratches and some shrinkage. Mechanically excellent.
