Description:

Introduced in 1907, this very early, two digit serialized S&W First Model .44 Hand Ejector Revolver has the very desirable triple lock mechanism and an engraving by S&W Master Engraver Paul Piquette who has signed his work "P. PIQUETTE" on the right side of the grip frame. The revolver features 50% coverage scroll engraving. A S&W factory rework star is stamped on the grip frame. Fitted with pearl grips featuring a relief carved American eagle on the right panel. Matching serial numbers are on the butt, cylinder and ejector shroud. According to the accompanying 1983 dated factory letter written shortly after the revolver was factory refurbished and embellished, S&W historian Roy Jinks presented Piquette with "the difficult task of exactly copying [Gustave and Oscar Young's engraving] style" for this revolver. The type of pattern was found on a revolver in Jinks' personal collection that Oscar Young engraved for S&W to display in the Pan-American Exposition, a World's Fair held in Buffalo, New York, in 1901. Oscar Young's style was chosen for this revolver because he was a factory engraver at the time this handgun was manufactured. An accompanying 1992 dated letter from Piquette on S&W letterhead confirms he engraved the revolver while also expressing his delight in the project stating, "It is a very important part of my early learning process in engraving and yet I don't believe I could improve on it, even today." A copy of the S&W invoice for the engraving is also included.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall as factory refurbished and embellished by Master Engraver Paul Piquette, retaining nearly all of the 1983 applied nickel plating and undersized grips with fiery colors and crisp carving. Mechanically excellent. A one-of-a-kind two digit serial numbered Triple Lock well-documented as factory engraved by Paul Piquette in the Young style at the direction of factory historian Roy Jinks.
