Description:

This is a 1903 Springfield sporting rifle that was sold in Nov 1930. There were only a total of 4,496 sporting rifle produced from 1923 through 1933. These N.R.A. sporting rifles used the regular 1903 National Match receiver with hand polished receiver rails and star gauged National Match barrel. This example falls into the noted range of other NRA sold, 1903 Sporting rifles. It has the original matching nickel steel (NS) marked national match bolt assembly that was hand fitted and left in the Springfield Armory "in the white" polished finish. It is correctly etched numbered on the side with "1367036". The receiver is marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903./1367036," and the barrel is marked "SA/ordnance shell and flame/11-30" with the correct star-gauge mark on the muzzle. It is fitted with an original Springfield Armory pistol grip sporter stock with two stock bolts. This is the correct non-finger groove model that has a short forend, single barrel band, and a NRA sporter style cupped steel butt plate. These stocks were manufactured from select straight grain dark walnut that were hand fitted to ensure a correct bedding of the recoil lug. They were fitted with the standard Lyman 48C micrometer rear sight, that was machined for the clip slot cutout exactly like the 1903 NM rifles with the original 1903 blade front sight. This example has been correctly fitted with a set of period correct Winchester type scope blocks that now has a Lyman Model 438 Field scope mounted. This series of rifle had a hand polished and rust blued metal finish with the NM bolt remaining "in the white", and hand rubbed linseed oil finish on the wood. The scope has an all blued metal finish with a target type rear mount and the standard crosshair reticle.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 80% of its faded original blue finish overall with blue loss on the edges, high spots, trigger guard, and floorplate area. Fading on the receiver and some thinning on the middle section of the barrel. The stock has been lightly sanded/cleaned and it has also been glass bedded around/under the front of the receiver and under the rear of the barrel. The scope retains 95% of its original blue finish with some light browning/oxidation on the front and rear ends of the scope tube. It has clear sharp optics with an intact reticle.
