Originally manufactured by Underwood, the original "UNDERWOOD" receiver marking has been struck out, with a large "N" stamped below the serial number. Due to the extreme demand placed on M1 Carbine manufacturers during World War II, there was a great deal of parts sharing and subcontracting going on to keep up with the rapid pace, in some cases as extreme as supplying full receivers to other firms; this style of marking is associated with receivers manufactured by Underwood and supplied to National Postal Meter for fitting and assembly. Less than 1,500 carbines are believed to have been made this way. Blade front and "I.R.CO." adjustable rear sights, with a Buffalo Arms "9-1943" barrel, "AMCO" Type III barrel band, the aforementioned receiver markings, flat bolt, milled trigger guard, flip safety, and "WA" marked magazine catch. Low wood two-rivet stock, with "P-J" stamped in the sling cut, "186" in white stencil on the right, an oval oiler cut, and a checkered steel buttplate. A tag reading "PROOF FILED AND INSPECTED/SUITABLE FOR NRA SALE/ CATEGORY #2" hangs from the trigger guard (this statement has not been verified). Included with the carbine is a CMP plastic case and a vintage shipping box addressed from the Red River Army Depot to a recipient in Texas in 1965 and labeled for a Winchester with an almost-matching serial number. Magazine absent.

Fine, with 70% of the arsenal refurbished parkerized finish, showing areas of gray and brown patina, bright edge wear, and scattered spotting and handling marks. The stock is good, showing extensive wear and tear appropriate to use, and some sanding on the underside of the pistol grip. Mild wear and staining present on the box. Mechanically excellent.
