Description:

This Gas Trap M1 Garand rifle was manufactured by Springfield Armory c. August 1937. This restored rifle has nearly all of the correct original components that are impossible to locate today. The rifle has the early, fluted stainless steel gas cylinder marked with the drawing number "D-28289". The gas cylinder has a straight rear front sight with the drawing number "B8882" on the right side. The 22-inch gas trap barrel is stamped "W" on the right side followed by a punched "P" proof mark. The receiver has a square bolt recess, is marked: "U.S. RIFLE/CAL. .30 M1/SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/197" on the heel and is stamped with the steel lot code "R1" above the drawing number "D 28291" on the right side. The rear sight cover is stamped with the drawing number "B8872", the windage knob has the early flared directional arrows, the elevation knob is checkered and the rear sight aperture is marked "B-8868-1". The top of the bolt is marked: "D28287/C1". The slant cut rod has the drawing number "D35382-0" on the top. The rifle has the rare keystone, square wire, compensating springs and early follower rod marked "C-46014". The clip guide is stamped with the drawing number "D-8875", the operating rod catch is bright and stamped with a "0". The follower arm is stamped "B8869" and the long trail follower is stamped "2". The early milled trigger guard has concentric rings and is marked with the drawing number "C 46025". The trigger housing is the early style with no pad marked "29290". The hammer is marked with the drawing number "C46008" and the flat top safety is marked "46015". The hammer spring tube is bright. The stock has a short barrel channel and checkered buttplate with no trap. The drawing number "D28293" is stamped ahead of the sling swivel. The boxed "SA/SPG" final inspection mark is stamped on the left side of the stock and encircled block "P" proof mark is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The right side of the front handguard is stamped "C6006" and the right side of the rear handguard is stamped "C46005". The grooved upper barrel band is stamped with the drawing number "C46000". The rear sight cover has a blued finish, the stainless steel gas cylinder is bright and the major components have the dark, gray-green, pre-war, armory parkerized finish. The stock and hand guards are oil finished black walnut. The rifle is complete with a russet leather, "1917" dated, M1907 sling. There is a removable collection mark on the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as reconverted to original configuration. The gas cylinder which appears to be an excellent original replacement. All of the other components appear to be original and correct for an early gas trap M1 Garand rifle. The major components retain 90% of the original parkerized finish. All of the markings and drawing numbers are sharp. The upper barrel band at the junction with the gas cylinder has been refinished and has light-moderate pitting. The stock and hand guards have been carefully refinished and are in very fine condition with light but legible inspection stamp, proof mark and drawing numbers. This is a really good looking example of a carefully restored, very early production Gas Trap M1 Garand rifle. It would be impossible to assemble the rare parts required to restore this rifle today. This rifle would be a stand out piece in any collection of U.S. martial arms.
