Description:

According to the notes included with the group, all the items herein are the former property of Harry B. Weaver, a Canadian Army Private and member of the First Special Service Force. Born in 1924, he joined the Canadian Army at age 18, and had already seen action (and was wounded) in fighting around Cassino when he was approached to join the Force. While a late addition to the unit, he was a participant in the SSF's actions in support of Operation Dragoon, the invasion of Vichy France; the Force was tasked to knock out two islands fortified by the Germans, so they could not hassle the main body of the landing. To do this, the Force needed to mount an amphibious night assault, approaching in small rowboats and scaling steep cliffs to take the Germans by surprise. Shortly after Dragoon, political needs prompted the breakup of the Force; Weaver returned to Italy, joining the Perth Scout Platoon. He would see additional action in Belgium and Holland, and was discharged in April of 1946. In civilian life, he worked as an inspector for Canadian Customs, retiring at age 65. He would continue to participate in veteran activities, including maintaining membership in the First Special Service Force Association. The cap is of olive drab twill construction, with a screw-back "US" badge attached to the left side and red, white and blue cord trim. The blouse, a short-waisted jacket in the "Ike" style, is constructed from olive serge and ink stamped inside the right breast for size 9, with a maker's mark for Hyde Park Clothes of Montreal, as well as an ink stamp "HBW" inside the waist. The external decoration includes four red service chevrons (representing 4 years) on the right sleeve, a gold wound stripe on the left, a pair of Private chevrons, "CANADA" patches on the shoulders and the Special Service Force "USA/CANADA" arrowhead patch on the left. A cloth jump wings patch is attached to the left breast, followed by the ribbons for the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France/Germany Star, Defense Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (with Overseas Service oak leaf) and the War Medal of 1939-1945; all of these ribbons line up with the recorded elements of Private Weaver's career. Included with the set is a service medallion inscribed to Weaver in 1985, Weaver's FSSF Association membership card from 2000/2001, metal badges for the Perth Regiment (three "maple leaf" badges, "PERTH" and "CANADA" badges), an extra one-piece ribbon bar and a fixed-mounted group of medals to match the blouse decoration, and an extra FSSF arrowhead patch.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. The blouse shows some wear on the button threads, and a small amount of spotting on the waist buckle. The cap shows a few small holes at the rear of the crown and some light staining, and may be hand-made. The accoutrements are all in very nice shape.
