Description:

This is an excellent example of a World War I, 1917 dated DWM Artillery Luger rig that is complete with an original leather holster, board shoulder stock, shoulder straps, drum magazine with loader and double magazine pouch. It has the standard blue metal finish, straw colored trigger, takedown lever, safety lever, ejector spring, and magazine release. It is fitted with a set of late war, light colored walnut grips. This pistol has the distinctive 8-inch Artillery length barrel, fully adjustable tangent rear sight graduated from 1-8 (100-800 meters) and the standard inverted "v" front sight, and both sights are of the late war fine tune type. The chamber is dated "1917," and it has the standard DWM toggle monogram with the standard German Imperial Army three "Crown/Gothic" letter test and acceptance proofs on the side of the barrel extension. The pistol has the regular military style full serial numbering with the face of the frame, underside of the barrel and barrel extension stamped with the full number "2289a". The various smaller parts all have the last two digits "89" of the serial number. The frame and extractor are marked "GESICHERT" and "GELADEN" respectively. This wonderful pistol is a complete rig that includes an original Artillery Luger flat board should stock with an imperial proof on the left side and original attaching iron (although non-matching). Attached to the stock is a "1916" dated brown leather holster, shoulder straps and boot cover. The holster is stamped inside the flap: "WILLIMXXXX/HAMELN/1916". The magazine wooden base is numbered "7137/m." This rig includes a first pattern Bing company drum magazine with cover and a Bing factory marked loading tool. This lot also includes "F. SCHUTZ/OFFENBACH/1917" marked double magazine pouch (without any spare magazine), a small brass fine tune sight adjustment tool, cleaning rod and magazine loading tool and reproduction manual. The rig is noted by the consignor as a war trophy taken by Silver Star winner Captain Edward Clayton Bell of the Connecticut National Guard and the 102nd Infantry Regiment, possibly during a raid in Soltz-Haut-Rhin. A Government Model Colt also attributed to Captain Bell is in the previous lot.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 97% plus of the original blue finish with high spot wear primarily on the muzzle area, side plate hump and lower areas of the grips straps. The smaller parts retain 95% of their original straw colors overall. The grips are in excellent plus condition with distinctive checkering on both sides with some minor handling marks. The leather holster is in very fine condition with a nice matching brown leather color overall showing light scuffs on the face of the flap and down the front of the holster. The stitching is tight overall, and the markings inside are a little faint but readable. The board stock is also in very fine condition showing numerous small scratches and handling marks on the side overall. The drum magazine, cover and loading tool are all in very fine condition with 95% of their blue finish overall and clear sharp markings. A nice looking all complete Artillery Luger rig.
