Description:

This is a very fine example of a late WWII Savage Arms Corp. production 1928A1 Auto Ordnance Thompson submachine gun. This model is the wartime version of the original Colt and Auto-Ordnance design as originally manufactured under a U.S. Government contract. It retains its original wartime inspectors markings of "RLB", indicating it was inspected by Col. Roy L. Bowlin of the Rochester N.Y. Ordnance District. This weapon has a late matte blue/parkerized wartime finish with a bright blued barrel and compensator. The receiver is marked with "U.S. MODEL OF 1928 A1/NO. S-469531" and farther back "THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBRE .45 AUTOMATIC CARTRIDGE. The obverse is marked in two-lines "AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION/BRIDGEPORT CONNECTICUT. U.S.A." The top of the receiver is marked with the "Thompson Bullet" logo. The left front edge of the receiver is stamped with the small Flame and Shell Ordnance bomb inspection stamped over a circled "REG" and "RLB" proofs. It retains some of the traditional early features, easily recognizable from the gangster movies such as the short 10 1/2 inch, finned barrel with the Cutts compensator with the matching detachable buttstock, combined with the later wartime features such as the stamped, fixed Lyman "L" type rear sight and the late war matte blued/parkerized type finish. The underside of the lower frame is also correctly matching numbered "S-456337". It is complete with a reproduction FBI type carrying case, an original "L" type 50-round Auto Ordnance drum magazine dated "1920", a US Cartridge Co marked 30-round stick magazine and a reproduction vertical foregrip.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 80% plus of the original blued phosphate wartime finish overall showing light wear and finish loss on the edge and high spots mixed with a brown patina due to handling and use. The bolt also retains 50% of its blued wartime finish. The markings are clear and sharp and as noted it has its original matching detachable buttstock assembly. The three wood components, foregrip, pistol grip, and buttstock are all in good plus condition with a matching oil finish overall showing numerous heavy handling marks, pressure dents, and dings on the sides from actual use over the years. The various accessories, drum and stick magazines are both in fine condition with and storage case is in excellent condition. NOTE: This item is restricted as a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) that is classified as a "Curios or Relic" as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
